Stevens Johnson Syndrome SJS Related Injuries

Many doctors consider Stevens Johnson Syndrome the middle stage in a segment of conditions that cause similar symptoms. These diseases are differentiated not by divergent symptoms, but rather the severity of the symptoms. Erythema Multiforme, while unpleasant, is the mildest form of this condition. Common symptoms of EM include:

  • Concentric or "bull's-eye" shaped rashes that appear on the hands, feet, fingers, arms, and legs

  • Unspecified flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, and joint pain

  • Sores in and around the mouth that can prevent chewing, eating, and speaking

These symptoms are usually termed Erythema Multiforme minor, in order to distinguish it from the middle condition Erythema Multiforme Major, or Stevens Johnson Syndrome. SJS shares many of the same symptoms as EM but causes blistering and skin lesions that are far more severe and widespread throughout the body.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome:

The most dangerous form of this skin disease is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome, or TENS. This extreme form of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is characterized by:

  • Drastic "sloughing" or shedding of the skin, nails, and hair due to extremely irritated blood vessels and mucous membranes under the skin

  • Blisters, rashes, and lesions that cover more than 30% of the body

  • Red, exposed patches of tissue due to sloughed skin

  • Spreads to the eyes, genitals, anus, mouth, throat, and even internal organs such as the liver, lungs, and kidneys

The effects of TENS are particularly dramatic and dangerous because not only is the sloughing of skin extremely painful, but it can also expose the body to shock due to loss of fluids and can cause infections due to the loss of protective skin.

Regardless of the particular stage of the infection, Erythema Multiforme, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome are some most unpleasant and painful conditions an individual can suffer from.
