Drugs & Medications Linked to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome SJS

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is frequently caused by a severe allergic reaction to medications. Within the past year, the news media reported on several cases that allegedly linked outbreaks of SJS to the use of common medications such as Advil, Motrin, and Ibuprofen. Unfortunately, many of these cases occurred in children misdiagnosed with similar but less dangerous conditions. Some of the most common drugs that provoke allergic reactions include:

  • Bextra: A popular COX-2 Inhibitor drug designed to treat arthritis and painful menstrual periods, Bextra came under fire for not only raising the potential for cardiovascular incidents and strokes but also for causing reactions such as SJS. According to Pfizer, the company behind Bextra, the likelihood of SJS was the main reason the FDA asked for removal of the drug from the market.

  • Celebrex: A COX-2 Inhibitor like Bextra, Celebrex was also linked to increased rates of SJS and SJS related conditions such as Erythema Multiforme and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome.

  • Daypro: This Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) has caused more deaths from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and TENS than any other prescription NSAID between 1993 and 1997. It remains a popular treatment for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

  • Ibuprofen: Millions of people take this mild pain reliever every day without giving it a second thought, but unfortunately derivatives such as Advil, Motrin, and Children's Motrin have been linked to SJS and TENS in a number of young people, including a seven year old girl who lost her sight due to SJS caused by the drug.

  • Antibiotics: A number of different antibiotic drugs such as penicillin, Amoxicillin, Bactrim, and Septra have been linked to reports of Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
